East Brunswick High School – Girls Soccer

Assistant Coach: Brian Merrigan
The first half was played evenly. In the second half, East Brunswick moved up their defenders to put more pressure on the net. This
strategy worked and the Bears made 12 shots in the second half. Bears shots hit the cross bar and the side posts, but didn’t go in. In
overtime, Elise Roughan launched a throw-in in front of the goal where Shannon Nulty was able to head-in the ball for the winning goal!
East Brunswick is now 19-1 for the season. Congratulations to the girls soccer team on this fine achievement!!
10/23/2008 – Girls Soccer: East Brunswick 2, Bishop Ahr 0 – GMCT Quarter Finals
Junior forward Shannon Nulty scored off a free kick with 4:30 off the clock in the second half. Bishop Ahr had been called for a shove and
East Brusnwick Senior defender Rebecca Kent set up the restart on the left 30 yard mark and sent a shot right at the net. Shannon leaped in
front of the goalie and headed the ball into the net. Angie Shehaj scored the second goal for East Brunswick with a long shot that
bounced of the right post and into the goal. Angie has missed most of the season with a leg contusion, but has returned in time to
help East Brunswick in the playoffs. East Brunswick keeper Gina Policastro smothered any shots that came her way.
East Brunswick is now 17-1 for the season.
November 11, 2008 – Central Group 4 Semifinal – Brick Memorial 2, East Brunswick 1
The Bears had a 13 game winning streak come to an end when they lost 2-1 to Brick. The Bears started strong with Monnica Farag heading in
Rebecca Kent’s direct kick to take a 1-0 lead. After Brick scored twice, the Bears kept fighting back, but just couldn’t get anything
by Brick goalkeeper Amanda Simon. East Brunswick is now 18-2-2 for the season.
November 6, 2008 – Central Group 4 Quarterfinal – East Brunswick 1, South Brunswick 0
The Bears got off to a lead when Shannon Nulty scored off a first half corner kick by Kent. Thanks to some tremendous saves by
both Bear’s goalkeepers, Kerri Williams and Gina Policastro, a one goal lead was all it took. East Brunswick is now 18-1-2 for the season.
October 30, 2008 – Greater Middlesex Conference Champions!! – East Brunswick 3, Bishop Ahr 0
Bishop Ahr held their own against the Bears for the first half, but in the end, they were no match for the powerful East Brunswick Bears.
The second half started quickly for East Brunswick when it took Lauren Edelman just 13 seconds to score with an assist from Monnica Farag.
Katie Chace and Jenna Carroll also scored the the Bears to put the game out of reach. Kerri Williams made two saves and Gina Policastro one save for the Bears. This was the 6th
conference title in a row and the 22nd since 1985. East Brunswick is now 17-1-2 for the season.
October 23, 2008 – East Brunswick 5, Middlesex 0
Senior Katie Chace and sophomore Angie Shehaj each scored two goals to power the Bears over Middlesex to advance to the semifinals against Monroe.
Mariam Bestawros had two assists and goalkeepers Kerri Williams and Gina Policastro registered a shutout although they did not face a shot.
East Brunswick is now 15-1-2 for the season.
October 20, 2008 – East Brunswick 7, Cardinal McCarrick 0
East Brunswick opened up the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament with an impressive effort. Sophomore Shannon Nulty lead the Bears with
three goals. Becky Acevedo got her first career goal when she put in a corner kick by Becca Kent.
The other goals were scored by Katie Chace, Jenna Carroll and Vicki Fernandes.
East Brunswick is now 14-1-2 for the season.
October 17, 2008 – East Brunswick 2, Old Bridge 0
East Brunswick defeated a Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division rival with goals from
Monnica Farag and Katie Chase. Monnica’s score was off a penalty kick at the 15th minute and Katie’s scored by heading in the ball at the 65th
minute. East Brunswick is now 13-1-2 for the season.
October 15, 2008 – East Brunswick 1, Sayreville 0
In a playoff preview, East Brunswick took on a strong Sayreville team and prevailed with a 1-0 victory. The Bears scored quickly
with Monnica Farag scoring in the opening minutes. Sayreville goalie Allie Couzo made many brilliant saves to keep the game close, but despite
a late flurry of activity from Sayreville, they were not able to capitalize. East Brunswick is now 12-1-2 for the season.
October 13, 2008 – East Brunswick 5, Piscataway 0
Katie Chace entered the game as the leading scorer for the Bears, but she did not have a multi-goal game – she changed that in a BIG way with
four goals against Piscataway. Monnica Farag provided the fifth goal as well as two assists. East Brunswick is now 11-1-2 for the season.
October 11, 2008 – East Brunswick 3, Lawrenceville Prep 1
East Brunswick’s Rebecca Kent scored two goals to help extend the Bears winning streak to 7 games. Rebecca’s first goal came off a header
pass from Alyssa Steinweif. The third goal for East Brunswick was scored by Vicky Fernandes on a throw-in by Marisa Estremera.
East Brunswick is now 10-1-2 for the season.
October 7, 2008 – East Brunswick 6, J.P. Stevens 1
East Brunswick started the scoring with a corner kick by Cassie Riccio which Kristina Estremera fired into the goal. The next goal was scored by
Kristina Estremera on a corner kick by Eliana Gerson. In the second half the Bears got goals by Lauren Edelman and Chelsea McCulley. The
final two goals were another by Kristina Estremera and a goal by Courtney Sachs.
East Brunswick is now 9-1-1 for the season.
October 6, 2008 – East Brunswick 1, South Brunswick 0
The game winning score was by Mariam Bestawros who returned from a torn ACL injury that caused the All Area midfielder to miss the previous 9 games.
The score came off a corner kick by Rebecca Kent. East Brunswick is now 8-1-1 for the season.
October 4, 2008 – East Brunswick 2, Hunterdon Central 0
East Brunswick got the lead when Lauren Edelman deflected a pass from Jenna Carroll into the goal. In the second half Hunterdon Central
was threatening, but the Bears defense limited their opportunities. With two minutes left in the game, East Brunswick put it away when
Lauren Edelman passed to Shannon Nulty who netted the final goal of the game. East Brunswick is now 7-1-1 for the season.
October 2, 2008 – East Brunswick 3, Edison 0
Lauren Edelman scored in the first half from 12 yards out off a pass from Shannon Nulty to put the Bears on top.
In the second half, Monica Farag passed to Angie Shehaj who scored on a breakaway. The final goal was scored by Monica Farag on
a corner kick by Rebecca Kent. East Brunswick is now 6-1-1 for the season.
