Despite having won the Greater Middlesex Conference Singles Tournament in 2013, East Brunswick junior Jennifer Chen felt somewhat unsure of herself going into this year’s GMC title match.

“The first set I was feeling a little bit insecure,” said Chen, who was the top seed of the tournament. “I was still figuring out my strategy and trying to keep steady. In the second set I started to get into the game and I knew I was getting better with my anticipation and movement.”

Chen applied her strategy well, defeating Old Bridge’s Pauline Kharkover in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to pick up her second straight GMC title.

“It felt amazing,” said Chen. “I feel like I’ve really redeemed myself from my freshman year.”

The GMC title win and an impressive regular season secured Chen’s place as the Home News Tribune’s 2014 Girls Tennis Player of the Year.
