The Knights defeated East Brunswick, 3-1, Thursday on goals from Jasmine Grossman, Samantha Potts and Breanna Jacinto.
After going down 1-0 on a goal from East Brunswick’s Carla LaRocca, Old Bridge was able to score two goals in the span of five minutes. Grossman opened the scoring with a mishit volley that looped over East Brunswick keeper Alex Kalafor. Potts followed that up with a brilliant one-touch chip to beat Kalafor high once again on a nice through ball from Alexis Suarez.
“The ball came to me so I headed it back to Alexis and she played a really good ball above the defender’s head and I ran right onto it and got my first touch right over the goalie,” said Potts.
Jacinto added to the lead early in the second half with another ball up high and over Kalafor. The Knights were able to hold off a bevy of chances from the Bears to secure the win.
A big part of that effort was goalie Nicole Carbone who stopped 12 shots in the victory. She stood up to the barrage of shots and was able to stop the high shot attempts, which was something she was expecting after the first game between the two teams. East Brunswick won that contest 4-0.
“I was definitely expecting that. When we played them the first time, a lot of balls were coming over the top, so I knew I would have to stand a little bit off my line more,” she said .
East Brunswick kept pushing players higher up to try and come back, but its chances weren’t converted. LaRocca almost added a second goal on a tough angle shot and Sydney Rosa was making strong runs into the box.
East Brunswick coach Kevin Brady saw the opportunities as well, but nothing was working for the Bears.
“I thought we did enough to generate a second goal in the first and second half,” said Brady. “Some days it doesn’t bounce for you. It has bounced for us a lot in the past. It didn’t bounce for us today.”
The Bears fell to 8-5. Brady saw the effort and the chances, but will look to improve as the Bears prepare for the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament. He also credited Old Bridge with simply playing a good game.
