East Brunswick High School 2005 Girls Soccer Summaries

November 12, 2005 – GMCT Finals: East Brunswick 2, Woodbridge 1

Top seeded East Brunswick had to battle hard to overcome a determined and physical Woodbridge team. In the end senior captain Kristie Lang came up huge in scoring both of East Brunswick’s goals, the second of which was a game winning shot in overtime. The game did not start out well for the Bears, with Woodbridge taking the offensive and with 14 minutes left in the half, Woodbridge scored. East Brunswick seemed to be inspired by this and took the game down to the Woodbridge end of the field where Casey Caruso, Kristie Lang, Caitlin Wescott and Jessica Campbell kept up the pressure. With 6 minutes left in the half, Kristie Lang scored to even up the game. The second half was scoreless, although both teams had some opportunities. Rachel Penn and Naomi Stahl were all over anyone that tried to move the ball away from the Woodbridge goal and goalie Alyssa Sotomayer made sure nothing got through. In the overtime period, on a corner kick, Kristie Lang stayed out of the crowd on the left side where she got off the winning shot. November 7, 2005 – NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 4 Semifinals:
Brick Memorial 3, East Brunswick 2

East Brunwick, once again, could not get past Brick who has defeated the Bears in the semifinal round of the state tournament four years straight. Brick Memorial scored the first goal seven minutes into the game on a shot by Jessica Fuccello. Jessica Campbell quickly erased the deficit by scoring just one minute later. Brick, however, scored twice more in the first half to take a daunting 3-1 lead into the half. Casey Caruso scored with 9 minutes left in the game to lift the Bears hopes, but it wasn’t enough. Alyssa Sotomayer had eight saves for East Brunswick and Kirsten Gash had seven more while sharing goalie duties. East Brunswick is now 17-2 for the season.

November 3, 2005 – Greater Middlesex Conference Semifinals:
East Brunswick 3, Piscataway 0

East Brunwick quickly demonstrated that they are the team to beat this year. Casey Caruso scored two goals in the first half against Piscataway and provided an assist to Brianne Russo 5 minutes before the end of the half. With this win, East Brunswick, under coach Lou Kosa will be in the conference championship game for the 20th time in 21 years. The Bears have won 19 of those 20 games. East Brunswick will play Brick Memorial in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV on Monday before playing Woodbridge for the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament Championship later this week. East Brunswick is now 17-1 for the season.

November 3, 2005 – Central Jersey Group 4 Quarter Finals:
East Brunswick 1, Manalapan 0

Samantha Citron scored the only goal that East Brunswick need to advance to the semi-final round of the Central Jersey Group IV Tournament. Samantha scored off a feed from Casey Caruso 13 minutes into the second half. Alyssa Sotomayer and Kirsten Gash combined for seven saves in the shutout. East Brunswick will play Brick in the semi-finals on Monday. Brick has knocked East Brunswick out of the sectional tournament each of the last 3 years – the Bears are going to be looking for revenge! East Brunswick is now 16-1 for the season.

November 1, 2005 – Central Jersey Group 4: East Brunswick 3, Old Bridge 0

Old Bridge has played East Brunswick tough in every game this season, but this time the Bears dominated. Casey Caruso scored the first goal at minute 31 with an assist from Rachel Penn. Kristie Lang scored the other two goals. The Bears are now 15-1 for the season.

October 28, 2005 – GMCT Quarter Finals: East Brunswick 2, Old Bridge 1

Top seeded East Brunswick had a hard fought battle with Old Bridge in the Quarter Finals of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament in East Brunswick. The game was still scoreless well into the second half and early in the second half, much of the action was down near East Brunswick’s goal, but the Bears showed why they are number 1. Allison Riccio fired a cross which Kristie Lang tapped into the lower right corner of the goal to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Brittany Durgin scored for Old Bridge with seven minutes left in regulation to tie the game, but East Brunswick did not want this game to slip through their fingers. Allison Riccio fired a cross which Shannon Mastrogiovanni fired at the goal. Old Bridge goalie Laura Rumola blocked it, but when the deflection came right back at Shannon, she was able to tap it through. East Brunswick is now 14-1 for the season. …more game pictures

October 26, 2005 – GMCT – East Brunswick 7, South River 0

The East Brunswick Bears were dominant in the second round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament against South River. Jessica Campbell and Kristie Lang each scored two goals for East Brunswick. The Bears are now 13-1 for the season.

October 20, 2005 – East Brunswick 3, South Brunswick 1

The East Brunswick Bears another strong victory, this time over South Brunswick. Shannon Mastrogiovanni scored two goals for the Bears and Casey Caruso scored a goal and an assist. East Brunswick out shot the Vikings 21-5. The Bears are now 12-1 for the season.

October 18, 2005 – East Brunswick 1, Old Bridge 0

Shannon Mastrogiovanni of East Brunswick scored the only goal of the day. Senior night was made all the more special, because the Bears got revenge for their only loss of the season which was against Old Bridge on September 24. Kristie Lang earned an assist and Kirsten Gash and Alyssa Sotomayer had a combined 8 saves to earn the shutout. The Bears are now 11-1 for the season.

October 6, 2005 – East Brunswick 1, J.P. Stevens 0

The East Brunswick Bears recorded another shutout, allowing Caitlin Flaherty’s first half goal to propel East Brunswick to victory. Alyssa Sotomayer had four saves for East Brunswick. The Bears are now 10-1 for the season.

October 1, 2005 – East Brunswick 3, Edison 2

The game didn’t start out well, with Edison scoring on a shot by Loretta Viento, but East Brunswick quickly responded with goals by Gabriella Barbato and Carly Lenger with an assist by Naomi Stahl. In the second half, Jessica Campbell extended the lead to 3-1. Edison got another goal in the 78th minute from Brittney Griffin, but they could come no closer to catching the Bears. The Bears are now 9-1 for the season.

September 30, 2005 – East Brunswick 1, South Brunswick 0

Casey Caruso scored East Brunswick’s only goal on short pass from Kristie Lang. East Brunswick’s goal keepers Kiersten Gash and Alyssa Sotomayer had two saves each in the shutout victory. The Bears are now 8-1 for the season.

September 27, 2005 – East Brunswick 1, Piscataway 0

Casey Caruso scored East Brunswick’s only goal on a cross by Kristie Lang. East Brunswick’s goal keepers Kiersten Gash and Alyssa Sotomayer had a combined 5 saves to earn the shutout. The Bears are now 7-1 for the season.

September 24, 2005 – Old Bridge 2, East Brunswick 1

In a stunning upset, the Knights of Old Bridge defeated the previously unbeaten East Brunswick Bears. Kristie Lang scored with an assist from Casey Caruso. East Brunswick got 3 saves from Sotomayer. East Brunswick out shot Old Bridge 18-8. The Bears are now 6-1 for the season.

September 20, 2005 – East Brunswick 2, Scotch Plains 1

Jessica Campbell scored both goals for East Brunswick, with assists from Kristie Lang and Casey Caruso. East Brunswick got 7 saves from Sotomayer and 2 from Gash. East Brunswick out shot Scotch Plains 13-5. The Bears are now 6-0 for the season.

September 17, 2005 – East Brunswick 2, Hunterdon Central 1

East Brunswick got a 1-0 lead when Casey Caruso scored on a penalty kick five minutes into the game. At the 60 minute mark, Ashley Francis of Hunterdon Central tied the game, scoring the first goal against East Brunswick for the season. One minute later, Kristie Lang put the Bears back on top by scoring her first goal of the season. Kristie then scored the winning goal at the 70 minute mark with an assist from Jessica Campbell. The Bears are now 5-0 for the season.

September 15, 2005 – East Brunswick 6, J.P. Stevens 0

East Brunswick with four wins has not had a goal scored against them yet this season. Against J.P. Stevens, Casey Caruso and Carly Lenger each scored two goals for the Bears. Also scoring were: Babrielle Barbato and Naomi Stahl. Casey Caruso, Caitlin Flaherty and Kristie Lang all had assists. The Bears are now 4-0 for the season.

September 13, 2005 – East Brunswick 5, Edison 0

East Brunswick’s first goal came when Allison Riccio shot a high pass from the corner that Shannon Mastrogiovanni was able to head in from point blank range. A few minutes later Kristie Lang fired a hard shot across the goal which Casey Caruso fired into the goal to put the Bears up 2-0. In the second half, Allison Riccio scored. A few minutes later, Kristie Lang fired another shot across the goal which Jessica Campbell drove in for the goal. Casey Caruso scored the final goal on a penalty kick. The Bears are now 3-0 for the season.

September 10, 2005 – East Brunswick 3, Westfield 0

East Brunswick got off to a slow start, but scored near the end of the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Carly Lenger scored two goals and Allison Riccio also scored to give the Bears a 3-0 victory. Casey Caruso contributed two assists. Junior goalie Kiersten Gash had three saves for East Brunswick. With their second shut out victory, the Bears improve to 2-0 for the season. …more game pictures

East Brunswick’s stopper Gabby Barbato scored a goal in the first half and Casey Caruso scored in the second half to give the top ranked Bears a 2-0 shutout victory over third ranked division opponent Piscataway.
