East Brunswick High School Football Game Summaries

November 24, 2005 – Old Bridge 40, East Brunswick 21

Both team started out slowly, forced to punt without a first down, in their first three possessions. East Brunswick got a break when they took over at Old Bridge’s 26 yard line after a muffed punt that Nick Dzielak recovered. Randall Nixon then passed to Eric Eckhardt for a touchdown. The lead was short lived, however, when Frischman connected with Cardullo for 66 yards and a touchdown. Randall Nixon again passed to Eric Eckhardt for another score to give East Brunswick a 14-6 lead. The rest of the day was pretty much all Old Bridge, except for a 35 yard touchdown run by Nick Dzielak which pulled the Bears to within 6 at 27-21. Two more touchdowns by Old Bridge sealed the fate for the Bears. East Brunswick finished the season at 2-8.

November 4, 2005 – Woodbridge 14, East Brunswick 0

East Brunswick had a tough time against a strong Sayreville team. Sayreville scored their first touchdown about 8 minutes into the first period. A few minutes later, the Bears punted only to have the kick returned for a touchdown. The Bears then settled down and started playing Sayreville tough. When James McCluskey intercepted a pass to stop a Sayreville drive, it looked like the Bears were finally getting something going, but when the drive stalled with a holding penalty, the Bears seemed to lose momentum. After Sayreville increased the lead to 21, the Bears made it down to the 5 yard line after a long run, but were not able to score. With this loss, East Brunswick is now 2-3 for the season.

East Brunswick just could not stop Vince Davidson of South Brunswick. He ran for 203 yards in 23 carries. While many fans were waiting in a long line to enter the stadium, Davidson had already scored a touchdown. With two minutes left in the first quarter Joe Clancy pushed South Brunswick’s advantage to 13. Two more Vince Davidson’s touchdowns brought the score to 27-0 at half. The band put on a wonderful half time show and the homecoming court was presented. The second half wasn’t much better with Davidson extending South Brunswick’s lead to 34-0. The Bears offense finally came to life and Randall Nixon tossed a pass to Joseph Peterson to put the Bears on the board. When James McCluskey intercepted the ball, the Bears were able to quickly strike again. Sergio Garcia caught a nice pass and drove down inside the 10. It took the Bears 4 plays and some head scratching by the officials, but Sergio Garcia’s 4th down carry was ruled a touchdown to put the Bears within 20. The Bears then recovered an onside kick and promptly drove down to the Vikings 10, but after South Brunswick intercepted the ball, they pounded out the rest of the game by handing off to Vince Davidson. With this loss, East Brunswick is now 2-5 for the season.

Stevens threw a touchdown pass to Kenny Melford. With 4 minutes left in the game, J.P. Stevens added another touchdown to go ahead 21-7. Randall Nixon got the Bears back into the game with a 4th and 16 pass to Jim McCloskey for a 59 yard touchdown. East Brunswick had a tough time getting their running game on track against North Brunswick. The Bears started off the game with a 93 yard kick off return, but things bogged down from there. North Brunswick scored three unanswered touchdowns, including a touchdown at the end of the half on a play that looked like a sure quarterback sack. The Bears started strong in the second half and after a 79 yard touchdown pass to Eric Eckhardt and a two point conversion, things were looking up. In the following drive, the Bears drove down the field strongly but stalled just out of field goal range and turned over the ball on downs. When North Brunswick scored again making the score 28-14, the clock started working against the Bears and with two turnovers in the Bears final 3 possessions, it just wasn’t the Bears night. East Brunswick is now 2-2 for the season.

September 9, 2005: East Brunswick 19, Perth Amboy 13

East Brunswick started the scoring with a 14 yard run by Nick Dzielak and the extra point by Quaglieri. Perth Amboy responded with a touchdown of their own to tie the game. In the second half Marcus Borden put in backup quarterback Joseph Peterson who rushed for 59 yards in 8 carries. His four yard touchdown run in the third quarter followed by a missed kick, put the Bears up 13-7. After Perth Amboy again tied the game in the fourth quarter, Peterson drove the team down field and scored on a 15 yard run. The defense had to fend off two more attempts by Perth Amboy. A fumble recovery by the Bears with less than 3 minutes left seemed to put the Bears out of danger, but Perth Amboy Quarterback James Harrell drove his team 62 yards in only 35 seconds to get within the 15 yard line. East Brunswick’s Stephen Netti saved the day by intercepting a screen pass to end the game.
